Getting Older? Define – and Redefine – Your Own Wellness
Society has taught us to look at the aging process as a series of losses and, ultimately, physical decline. But are we experiencing loss, or change?
When we define ourselves as diminished, we reduce ourselves to a set of biological process that requires the intervention of the medical establishment to maintain. It’s as simple as that. This is the end product of taking stock of our lives and placing all of the checkmarks under the heading of “Deleted.”
As human beings, we are much more than lack of aches and pains. Emotions. Intellect. Energy and vitality. Connections to friends and family. Giving to our communities and the world. A sense of spirit, however we define that.
Sure, there are times when we all need to go to the doctor. What I am suggesting is that we redefine wellness not as entitlement to dip our cups into the medical establishment’s deep well of office visits and prescriptions but instead as entitlement to embrace who are we are at this time in life and take an active role in enhancing our own growth and development. Physically, emotionally, intellectually, spiritually… the aspects of your life that the medical establishment can help you with and those it can’t.
You and I are entitled to be well as we get older. And we are also entitled to manage our own wellness and not simply to be “as sick as wanna be.” Isn’t that what we’ve worked toward all these years?
